In college as in the real world, we seldom encounter information in a vacuum: instead, we are presented with problems and contradictions that have no “right answer” and require clear, incisive articulation in order to be effectively addressed. These situations call on us to apply all of our conceptual tools in complex ways that no standardized test can meaningfully assess, much less prepare you for. This sequence of six hour-long classes will expose students to the methodological approaches to synthesizing multiple sources in order to arrive at analytical insights, as taught at Harvard and other elite universities. Prerequisite: Critical Reading & Writing Some Skills You'll Learn: 💡 Synthesize information from multiple sources meaningfully. 💡 Put the insights of one argument in dialogue with another’s. 💡 Challenge a source’s argument by drawing on the claims of another. 💡 Deconstruct your critical insight into logical, sequential steps. 💡 Structure your insight for maximum impact. 💡 Integrate others’ ideas responsibly into your own. 💡 Incorporate effective signal phrases & signposts for clear, readable prose.
